The History of the Relais
The Leonina Castle is a fortress built in the 12th century, once the residence of Cardinal Fabio Chigi, later Pope Alexander VII.
In 1234, the castle was the setting for a battle between the Sienese and the Orvietans for the conquest of the territory.
The fortress suffered countless damages and was later transformed into a Renaissance castle, during the 15th century.
After a long, troubled period, Leonina Castle was brought back to life in 2002, following intensive and thorough renovation work.
